We are Katrin and Helga Björt, dedicated veterinarians and the owners of Dýralæknar Katrin og Helga ehf. After years of working in mixed practice, we established our own veterinary service in 2022, driven by a passion for offering high-quality, personalized care for animals.
Located in the South of Iceland, we specialize in a wide range of veterinary services for horses, cows, sheep, and small animals. We provide on-site visits to stables, farms and homes, ensuring that animals recieve the care they need in the comfort of their environment. Our services include routine and emergency veterinary care for both large and small animals, pre-purchase health examinations, horse dental care, ultrasound diagnosis, chiropractic treatments and much more.

Additionally, we have successfully arranged the shipment of chilled semen to other local insemination centers.
Our extensive services, including semen collection, quality assessment, and mare insemination, are available to anyone who reaches out to us for assistance.
In 2024, we initiated an exciting collaborative project with Guðmundur Jón Viðarsson from Skálakot, focusing on the freezing of equine semen for use both within Iceland and abroad. We inseminated five mares with frozen semen in 2024, and we are expecting four foals in the spring of 2025. This pioneering project marks a major milestone, as semen from an Icelandic stallion living in Iceland has never been exported. Currently a modern insemination center is under construction in Efra-Holt, which is owned by Guðmundur. At this center Dýralæknar Katrin og Helga ehf. will offer a wide range of services, including sperm retrieval, freezing, and long-term storage, to further enhance the availability and quality of equine reproductive services.

The company, which is owned and operated by Katrin and Helga, provides mixed veterinary practice, primarily working with horses and cattle, but also sheep and companion animals. During the summer, we perform artificial insemination of mares, so ultrasound examinations of mares and other reproductive work make up a significant part of the workload.
Qualified veterinarian with a valid license to practice in Iceland.
Good command of Icelandic and/or English.
Interest in working with all types of animals.
Previous experience as a veterinarian is an advantage but not required.
Experience performing ultrasound examinations of mares is an advantage but not required.
Good communication skills.
Ability to work independently.
On-the-job training provided as needed.
A vehicle is provided for work-related use.
Opportunities to attend relevant courses and training.
Possibility of 80–100% employment.
Salary according to the collective agreement between BHM and SA.
